I am always heavily burdened by a kind of news each time it arises, not because the news is in any way more grave than anything I have heard or could hear, more because I often think we would all have been warned hard and long enough about it.
It is the strangest thing with sin, how it keeps burning us but we keep returning to it. Strange because ‘once bitten twice shy’ right? but sin defies this idiom, unfortunately, once bitten does not always translate to being shy next time when confronted with same or even different sin. Thank God for redemption. We would NEVER have been able to fight sin in this flesh by ourselves.
I sat about a week ago on my bed and starring into space, I asked God audibly “why is it always sexual sin?“, for the umpteenth time in the last 10 days before that day, I had found myself in a conversation where someone asked me ‘did you read the news on Ravi?‘. While I would love to refrain from delving into my thoughts and heart ache on the matter, I also realise that most times, people need answers and an assurance that we won’t defend evil because they carried the Christian title and even position. So I have indulged conversations without knowing where they would end, but assured that the Holy Spirit would grant utterance.
This one hit me hard. Not because of anything other than the platform and voice He had, both in the church and outside the church. I read men mock God, I read people question the church and purity and I read the institution he left behind apologise more times than I could count. I really wanted to know ‘just why, why is it always sexual sin?’
There is no hierarchy of sin right? so why would a person come to Christ (accept grace, the biggest transformation), stop killing, stop theft, stop lying but still be plagued with sexual sin? I don’t believe there is some ‘extra’ grace to overcome some ‘extra’ sin. The blood of Jesus and grace of God is sufficient to conquer all sin.
I refuse to sit as judge and jury over another’s matter but I want the body to become aware of the arsenals the devil has deployed on this side of life, particularly as it relates to sexual sin in these times. He’s deployed deception to make a person feel like they do not need to flee, they do not need accountability and they have grown to a level of exemption from certain kinds of sin. He has deployed the hyper-grace message to make people feel like ‘I am saved and in Christ and so nothing, not even sexual sin can shift me’ as long as I repent. Finally, He has deployed fear, fear to confront the spirits that sponsor this sin, fear that you might never be free and fear that if people find out, they won’t ever see you the same. Working in different degrees in different people, the devil is slowly deceiving people and the more blind they become to the damages and overall impact on themselves and the larger church.
1 Corinthians 6:18 says to “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.” Sexual sin is not to be fought against or rejected. It is to be fled from. RUN. You do not look at your spiritual maturity, your position in church and the society or the size of your God in this, all God admonishes us to do is flee. Anything that sponsors thoughts, feelings or ideas that could lead to sexual sin should be eliminated.
Now, more than ever, the name of God must be upheld, not only in our mouths and hearts but in our society and Nations. Our living must be consistent with that of Jesus and we must be reflections of the purity that we now have in Him. Don’t be a victim of satans deployment, we’ve been warned and prepared for these things before now, in this army, we take up our weapons to fight everything but we’ve been licensed to flee from sexual sin, so when you sight it, just run.
