All by myself …

I was reading about the king of Tyre this morning in Ezekiel 28, God gave Ezekiel prophecy against him and the reasons highlighted really make me tremble, not because of their seeming harshness, but because it’s easy to fall prey to the exact same reasons he receives that prophecy.

Verses 4 and 5 highlights the reasons, it said “By your wisdom and understanding you have gained wealth for yourself and amassed gold and silver in your treasuries. By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, and because of your wealth your heart has grown proud.” Ezekiel 28:4-5

And because of the above, he then forgot he was mortal and thought himself to be a god.

I sat on that and I realise that pride isn’t the elephant in the room here as we think it is because we all know that God resists the proud, the larger issue I see tugging at my heart is that anything we do by and for ourselves could become a threat to the very essence of our faith.

To clarify that, anything we think we do outside of God that appears successful, poses a threat to the very core of our faith; which teaches that we are dead to self and only live by Christ is us (Romans 6:11).

It wasn’t always so, but since sin entered the picture, self became a separate and arch enemy to The Spirit, and so anything it produces in and by itself, it builds a wall around to guard it.

The Spirit on the other hand, when He works in us and produces through us, we can’t build any walls or attempt to guard it, because there’s the awareness of us being but stewards in His mighty hand.

I read of the prophecy against the king of Tyre this morning and my only prayer was “Lord, if you can’t do it in me or through me, I don’t want to do it by myself”.

There’s probably much I can do by myself (which really is a deception of the enemy because we’re all able only by God whether or not we realise it), but if we fall for that deception and think we can do by ourselves, the self factor in whatever is done will not allow the glory of God to be seen or revealed.

The beauty of the God we serve is even that He is an enabler, He wants to do in and through us, and the bible makes us understand that we can do all things through His Spirit at work in us (Philippians 4:13), I’d wonder why we will ever want to do away from this sufficiency, but if self exalts us to want and desire outside of God then we will build and reap, but fruits that’ll bear our names and serve no eternal purpose, even if just for saying “it was by Gods grace”.

May we have the privilege to always say of anything that it was by the grace of God.

So timely!!! I was learning about self too during the summer and I realize that Self strives with God in a Man’s life and it can do anything to Impress people. But the only way I can be used by God is when He uproot this Self nature and I daily deny self. Another profound thing I also learnt about Self is that Self whether good or bad must die because all it does is to glory in itself in a Man’s life rather than Glorifying God.
It is my daily prayer too that Lord if you can’t do it in me or through me I don’t want to do it by myself 😢🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️
